PROTECTOR,GUY

A shield or a guard designed to be attached to an item for the purpose of protecting the item and/or people from possible damage or injury.

ROD,ANCHOR

A straight shank bar of circular cross section, having one end straight or angled and designed with an eye(s) or other provisions for securing a guy wire, cable, or rope. The opposite end is externally threaded or otherwise provided with a means of attaching to another item or a solid foundation. Has no designed means of anchoring into the ground. Excludes threaded end types with oval eye or round eye, for which, see BOLT, EYE.

COUPLING,BEAD CHAIN

A device used to connect the ends of two different items by attaching to their end terminations.

HOOK,BARREL

A device formed with a wide lip to grab the lip of an item.

HOOK,GRAB

A metal hook formed with a relatively narrow throat which grabs a chain link and prevents the chain loop tightening when load is applied.

HOOK,SLIP

A metal hook with a relatively wide throat to permit chain or line reeve through and tighten when load is applied.

HOOK,CHAIN,S

A wire formed in the shape of the letter S, used to attach wire chain to other objects.

SOCKET,WIRE ROPE

A funnel-shaped receptacle or basket, designed to hold the end of an item when secured by molten metal or by a wedge. Extending from the upper surface of the basket is a closed loop, a stud end, or two clevis-type prongs or jaws with ends perforated to receive a pin attaching the device to another item. See also TERMINAL, WIRE ROPE (as modified).

ANCHOR,GUY

An anchor which may be any one of several designs, such as a ribbed cone, an assembly of expanding blade or plates, or a helical balde or spring. The item must have either an integral driving rod or accommodations for affixing a driving rod which may not be included. It may include a cable assembly which facilitates installation and is an integral part of the item. Does not include guy wire(s) or rope(s). Excludes POST, SCREW METAL.

FASTENER,BEAD CHAIN

A device designed to connect one item to other items. One end clamps over the end termination of an item, the other has a hole.

WEIGHT,OVERHAULING

An item for weighting down a rope or cable so that it is self-overhauling.

CLAMP,WIRE ROPE,THREADED

An item consisting of three or four parts, two of which form a grooved body and have tapered threads that are held firmly in place by rounded hexagonal nuts.

CLAMP,WIRE ROPE,BOLTED

A two-piece metallic clamp of various shapes with a groove(s) in which an item is held by means of a bolt(s) or screw(s). It is generally used in conjunction with hoisting or guy lines.

PELICAN HOOK AND TURNBUCKLE ASSEMBLY

An assembly consisting of a turnbuckle and a pelican hook. It may be used in ship's standing rigging such as radio antenna, and mast stays where ready adjustment and quick detachability are required.

CHAIN FASTENER,ANGLE

A strip of metal with a hole at either end. One is for mounting on flat surface, the other end is elevated upward for attaching the end termination(s) of another item.

GUARD,ANCHOR CHAIN

A device designed for attaching to an item at a point where it comes in contact with the hawse pipe of a mooring buoy as a protection against chafing.

CLAMP,LINE,SLIDING GRIP

A mechanical device specifically designed for use on a guy or ropes which require loosening and tightening. The device consists of cylindrical body which is conically drilled to receive a hollow tapered plunger. The plunger through which the rope passes is designed with a flared external end and pressure grip internal end. Tension on the rope through the device seats the internal end of the plunger, holding the rope taut in a pressure grip, necessitating the pulling out of the plunger to release the rope. May or may not have a dee ring.

HOOK,CASE,STUDDED PLATE

A metal item used in pairs for mechanical handling of wooden boxes and crates, each consisting of an integral arm and points. When in use, the points are placed against opposite sides or ends of the box or crate and the lifting cable, passing through openings in the ends of the arms, pulls them towards each other, thereby forcing the points into the material of the box or crate to make a firm lifting grip.

HOOK,RELEASE

A metal hook with a hinged point and with means for holding the point in normal operating position. When desired, the point may be released to swing outward, thereby freeing the engaged chain or rope. Excludes pelican hooks.

FERRULE,WIRE ROPE

A hollow, cylindrical, metallic item designed to be affixed by means of molten metal or swaging, over the end(s) of an item to make it adaptable for insertion into socket type terminations or attachments, such as HOOK, CHOKER; HOOK, DRAWBAR, LOGGING; and WINCH, DRUM, HAND OPERATED. Excludes swaged fittings.

PROTECTOR,POLE

A metallic shield or guard designed to be attached to a portion of an item for the purpose of protecting the item against guy wire chafing, vehicular hubs, and the like. It may include a hook for a guy wire.

BAND,WIRE STRAND

An item designed to be bent around the end of another item for the purpose of serving and/or securing the individual segments. Does not include fasteners which hold by screw or spring action. See also CLAMP, WIRE ROPE, BOLTED; CLAMP, WIRE ROPE, SADDLED; and CLAMP, WIRE ROPE, THREADED.

SHACKLE

An open or closed link of various shapes with extended legs. Each leg has a transverse hole to accommodate a pin, bolt, or the like, which may or may not be furnished. Excludes clevis (as modified).

SWIVEL,EYE AND JAW

Two parts mounted on common axis so as to permit a relative rotation between the parts. One part has a round or oval opening and the other is U-shaped and has a pin or bolt across the open legs.

SWIVEL,EYE AND LINK

A round or oval part and either a D-shaped or a heart-shaped part mounted on a common axis so as to permit relative rotation between the parts.

SWIVEL,JAW AND JAW

Two U-shaped parts mounted on a common axis so as to permit relative rotation between the parts. The U-shaped parts have a pin or a bolt across the open legs.

SWIVEL,LINK AND JAW

A D-shaped part and a U-shaped part mounted on a common axis so as to permit relative rotation between the parts. The U-shaped part has a pin or a bolt across the open legs.

SWIVEL,LINK AND LINK

Two D-shaped parts mounted on a common axis so as to permit relative rotation between the parts.

SWIVEL AND LINK ASSEMBLY

A device consisting of two parts, which are mounted on a common axis so as to permit a relative rotation between the parts, having one or more fixed or detachable items attached to one or both ends of the device. Does not include items with chain.

HOOK,PELICAN

A metal hook with a hinged point and with a sliding link, ring, bail, or similar locking device, to secure the point to the body in order to close the throat. The body may be designed of a single piece or it may consist of link(s). When desired, the point may be released to swing outward, thereby freeing the engaged item(s). Excludes HOOK, RELEASE.

HOOK,LOGGING LINE

A metal hook having a flatted eye on one end and a relatively shallow and narrow throat opening with a plain or arrow point. Used in conjunction with choker slings in logging and similar operations. Excludes HOOK, HOIST.

HOOK,CHOKER

A metal item used with slings in logging operations. It has a relatively tight fitting throat or aperture for the size(s) of wire rope designed for, to permit the rope to form a tight noose and prevent the rope from coming loose accidentally.

HOOK,CARGO

A strongly constructed item having a short leg extending from its base toward the point of the item to prevent the sling or line from slipping off the item. Some styles are furnished with swivels, links, and the like, for special uses. Excludes items with safety throat closures that completely close the opening. For items with safety throat closures, see HOOK, HOIST.

HOOK,HOIST

A strongly constructed metal item having a relatively narrow, shallow throat. It may or may not have a safety throat closure. Excludes HOOK, LOGGING LINE and HOOK, CARGO.

THIMBLE,ROPE

A metallic or nonmetallic ring, loop, solid plate, casting or moulding, formed with a grooved outer edge to fit within an eye splice; or maybe a crescent-shaped hollow tube. It is generally used in multiple leg slings to protect from chafing.

PLUG,LOCKING,DETACHABLE CHAIN LINK

A headless item of soft metal used for securing the fastening pin of a device.

HOOK,GUY

A curved piece of metal designed to prevent an item from slipping down a pole where the pull is exerted at a sharp angle. The device is not intended to maintain the full strain of an item. See also GUY ATTACHMENT.

GUY ATTACHMENT

A device designed for the purpose of securing an item to an object, such as a pole. It has an unthreaded mounting hole(s) at one end, and one or more grooved channels at the other end. See also HOOK, GUY.

HOOK,LOG GRAB

A metal item, shaped to form an angle of approximately 90 degrees (1.5705 radians) with a wide throat opening, having an eye and projection on one end, a spur on the heel, and a plain point. It is used in pairs, primarily for logging.

SWAGING SLEEVE,WIRE ROPE

A compression fitting designed to make a permanent eye, lap, or running splice on an item.

BALL END,WIRE ROPE,SWAGING

An item designed for attaching to an item and is used with socket terminal. Its physical shape is that of a ball or modified cylinder. The ball type may have a shank on one end, or identical shanks on each end. For items specifically designed for aviation, see BALL END, WIRE ROPE, SWAGING, AVIATION.

TERMINAL,WIRE ROPE,SOCKET

An item designed to receive a swaged ball end termination. One end is spherical shaped and the opposite end is eye or fork shaped for attaching to another part.

TERMINAL,WIRE ROPE,STUD

An item designed for swaging to another item as an end termination. One end is a cylindrical sleeve and the opposite end is an externally threaded fastener whose threaded portion is of one nominal diameter; its unthreaded portion may be of any shape or size. For items specifically designed for aviation, see TERMINAL, WIRE ROPE, STUD, AVIATION.

STAKE,GUY

An item made of metal or metal and wood usually of rectangular or circular cross-sectional shape. It is generally pointed or tapered at one end; the other end may have facilities for fastening to a wire or rope. Excludes STAKE, WOOD. See also ANCHOR, GUY; ROD, GROUND; and PIN, TENT.

END RING,BEAD CHAIN

A solid circular metallic item with one or more spherically headed prongs extending outward to which an item is attached. It is used to provide a means of attaching one part to other parts, such as the pull of a slide fastener, jewelry chains, free closure retainers, and the like.

WEDGE,WIRE ROPE SOCKET

A solid metallic, pear-shaped item with a grooved or flat outer edge, around which an item is shaped and inserted into the receptacle of another item.

COUPLING,WIRE ROPE,QUICK DISCONNECT

A fastening device designed to rapidly release the end terminations of an item.

WEDGE,DRUM CLAMP,WIRE ROPE

A solid metallic item, longer in relation to its width and thickness, with flat parallel sides and one edge tapered along its entire length. One edge is grooved and the other edge is rounded to join a counterpart. When wedged into position it clamps the end of wire rope to a drum. Excludes WEDGE, WIRE ROPE SOCKET.

CLAMP,WIRE ROPE,SADDLED

An item designed to hold two different items of the same diameters together. It shall consist of one or two with U-bolt and nuts, or two grooved parts each with an integral stud which forms an L-shape and is held together with nuts. Excludes CLAMP, WIRE ROPE, BOLTED and CLAMP, WIRE ROPE, THREADED. For electrically conductive items, see CLAMP, ELECTRICAL.

CONNECTOR,FERRULE,WIRE ROPE

A metallic preformed item of various shapes designed to connect the ferruled ends of wire rope. Excludes COUPLING, WIRE ROPE, QUICK DISCONNECT.

HOOK,SISTER

A metal item consisting of two matching but opposite parts, each beveled near the point so as to fit together and form an inclosure. The matching parts must be separated by hand to release the inclosed item.

GROUND ANCHOR KIT

A group of items such as sledge hammer(s), driving head, steel driving rod(s), ground anchors, Holding Tool Handle, pins and the like for use in securing tents, shelters, aircraft, utility poles, communication masts and the like to the ground.

PARTS KIT,HOOK

A collection of different items such as safety latches, springs, bolts, washers, nuts and the like, as required for completion or replacement of worn mounting and safety elements for hooks.

SHACKLE AND WIRE ROPE CLAMP KIT

A collection of different SHACKLE; CLAMP (1), WIRE ROPE (as modified); THIMBLE, ROPE; and HOOK (as modified) designed for the interconnection of chains and ropes and for connecting them with other items. Tools, bulk material and stowage cases may be included.

TERMINAL,ROPE,SWAGING

An item designed for swaging to a ROPE, FIBROUS or ROPE, WIRE as an end termination. One end is a cylindrical sleeve and the opposite end is formed in the shape of a fork, eye, slot, and the like, for attaching to another part. For items specifically designed for aviation, see TERMINAL, ROPE, SWAGING, AVIATION.

LATCH,SAFETY,HOOK

An item which is mounted on the opening of a hook and prevents slipping and/or load loss. It automatically returns to its initial position by spring action. It may include a spring, bolt, nut and/or clamp.

CHAIN FASTENER,FLAT

A strip of metal with a hole at either end. One is for mounting the item, the other end is for attaching the end termination(s) of a chain, a wire or fiber rope.

ANCHOR PLATE,WIRE ROPE ASSEMBLY

A rigid metallic item usually bent or formed at an angle and provided with attaching facilities such as holes, studs, or the like. It is designed to secure one end of a wire rope assembly.

PULLING ATTACHMENT SET,CHAIN

An item consisting of two or more pulling attachments usually used on the end of a chain. May or may not include the chain.

LINK,DETACHABLE

A metal link made in two or more pieces, held securely together by means of a locking pin or other device but may taken apart for reuse. It is used to connect a chain and/or a cable and/or a rope and/or a strap, and the like. Excludes transmission chain links.

GUY

An assembly consisting of a wire, rope, cable or chain, and the necessary clamp(s), fitting(s) or insulator(s) specifically designed for attaching to an anchor rod or solid foundation at one end and to a pole, mast, tower or anchor and/or anchor rod, for the purpose of mechanical support. See also WIRE ROPE ASSEMBLY, SINGLE LEG; and CHAIN ASSEMBLY, SINGLE LEG.

CHAIN,WELDLESS

A series of like metal links interconnected by bending ends through or over the adjacent unit. This does not include chain with attachments or terminations. See also CHAIN, STUD LINK and CHAIN, BEAD.

CHAIN,WELDED

A series of like size welded metal links interconnected to form a flexible continuation of the links. This does not include chain with attachments or terminations. See also CHAIN, STUD LINK.

CHAIN,STUD LINK

A series of like metal links with studs, interconnected to form a flexible continuation. Each link has a short distance piece, worked at its mid-length, at right angles to its major axis in order to maintain the link shape. This does not include chain with attachments or terminations. See also CHAIN, WELDED and CHAIN, WELDLESS.

LINK,CHAIN,CONNECTING

A metal item in two halves in the shape of a letter C which are fixed together permanently by placing the two halves together and peening over the pins which are an integral part of the item. Excludes LINK, ROLLER CHAIN.

LINK,CHAIN,SWING

A metal item in two halves making a figure 8 which is pivoted at the center for quick assembly of two parts. Excludes LINK, CHAIN, DETACHABLE.

LINK,CHAIN,COLD SHUT

A split triangular shaped item, having an eye at one end. It is designed to form a loop by driving the opposite end through the eye and peening over. It is used for making repairs or fastening on attachments.

LINK,CHAIN,END

A metal loop in various shapes and styles other than circular, forged or welded in one piece, usually used on the end of an item for attaching other parts. May also be used with thimble(s) or shackle(s) on the end of wire or fiber rope. Excludes LINK, CHAIN CONNECTING; and LINK, CHAIN, LAP.

CHAIN,BEAD

A series of hollow ball-shaped units interconnected by short pieces of wire in the form of "dumbbells". Each knob end of wire is inclosed by a ball making an extremely flexible continuation. This does not include chain with attachments or terminations. For chain(s) with attachments or terminations, use CHAIN ASSEMBLY, SINGLE LEG.

WIRE ROPE ASSEMBLY,SINGLE LEG

An assembly consisting of wire rope, with terminal attachment(s) and/or end loop(s), in a continuous run from end to end. (If without attachments, one end must terminate in a loop.) It may contain one or more intermediate and/or end attachments such as sliding or fixed ring(s), hook(s), or the like. For items specifically designed for aviation, see WIRE ROPE ASSEMBLY, SINGLE LEG, AVIATION. Excludes CONTROL ASSEMBLY, PUSH-PULL.

CHAIN ASSEMBLY,SINGLE LEG

An assembly of chain(s) with attachment(s) in a continuous run from end to end. It may contain one or more intermediate and/or end attachments such as sliding or fixed ring(s), swivel(s), or hook(s), etc..

WIRE CORD

Three or more wires braided or woven together without a core to form a rope or cord like item. See also BRAID, WIRE.

GUY SET

A grouping of guys not all alike. See GUY as defined.

WIRE ROPE ASSEMBLY SET

An item consisting of two or more WIRE ROPE ASSEMBLY, SINGLE LEG. It may include such items as marker tags.

LINK,CHAIN,LAP

An item with an open overlapping joint.

ROPE,WIRE

Three or more metallic strands twisted helically together around a fiber, metallic, or combination wire and fiber core. Excludes items rated for electric current carrying applications.

STRAND,WIRE

Three or more wires twisted helically around each other, or they may be twisted in concentric layers around a single wire or fiber center. Outside layers of wires may be interlocked, forming a smooth outside surface. Strand may be marline or strip steel clad. Excludes items rated for electric current carrying applications.

PARTS KIT,WIRE ROPE ASSEMBLY

CHAIN,NONMETALLIC

An assembly of identical, flexibly interconnected nonmetallic links. Excludes chains with terminations.

PARTS KIT,LINK,CHAIN,DETACHABLE

A collection of different items such as chain link pins, bushings, teeth, split pins and the like used for assembly/interconnection or for replacement of worn replaceable chain links.

CHAIN,TRANSITION LINK

A series of unlike links interconnected to form a flexible continuation. Excludes chains with attachments or terminations.

COVER,WIRE ROPE

A nonmetallic item used to inclose a wire rope around its circumference and along its length to protect the wire rope from dust and moisture, and prevent the wire rope from damaging other items. It may be preformed or it may have facilities for attaching item into position. Excludes items specifically designed for insulation.

LINK,DETACHABLE

A metal link made in two or more pieces, held securely together by means of a locking pin or other device but may taken apart for reuse. It is used to connect a chain and/or a cable and/or a rope and/or a strap, and the like. Excludes transmission chain links.

LARIAT

HOUSELINE

A small line of three strands laid left handed, for seizing.

MARLINE

A small line of two strands twisted loosely left handed, used for seizing and as a covering for wire rope.

ROUNDLINE

A three stranded line of balanced twist construction used for seizings.

FIBER ROPE ASSEMBLY,SINGLE LEG

An assembly of fiber rope with or without terminal attachments in a continuous run from end to end. (If without attachments, one end must terminate in a loop.) It may contain intermediate and/or end attachments such as sliding or fixed ring(s) or hook(s).

CORD,ELASTIC

An item composed of one or more elastic strands encased within a layer or layers of braid. It is generally used for shock absorbing and exercising cord. It may be straight cord or endless ring type. Excludes garters and CORD, ELASTIC, PARACHUTE PACK OPENING.

TAPE,LACING AND TYING

A narrow textile material fabricated on a braiding machine and treated with penetrating wax or similar substance which enters the interstices of the material from surface to surface.

CORD,FIBROUS

A braided cordage item (or twisted fiber glass item) of any diameter with or without a core (includes natural or synthetic fibers). Excludes items with fittings; LINE (as modified). See also TWINE, FIBROUS and ROPE, FIBROUS.

RATLINE

A small, usually three stranded, tarred rope used for ratlines. One of the small transverse ropes attached to the shrouds and forming the steps of a rope ladder.

ROPE,FIBROUS

An assemblage of fibers or filaments (includes natural or synthetic fibers with the exception of asbestos) in the form of a continuous cylindrical length, 1/8 inch (3.175 mm) or over in nominal diameter. It is stranded construction made by twisting or laying together 3 or more strands in which each successive twist direction is in the opposite direction to the preceding twist. A hemp, jute, or sisal cordage specialty sometimes known to the trade as wormline.

TWINE,FIBROUS

An assemblage of twisted fibers or filaments, usually designated by commercial number, in the form of a continuos cylindrical length, either of single yarn construction or of a ply yarn construction (includes natural or synthetic fibers). It also includes twisted items of multistrand construction. See also CORD, FIBROUS.
